You moved the key but you did not setup the proper file permissions, or did a proper setup of the ssh-agent. If you just generate a new key the gen will take care of that. When you generate is good to have at least a size of 2k, 4k if you want to access more secure environments (some services require minimum 4k). Paste that public key into the text box at the bottom of the page Click the 'Add Key' button at the bottom of the page And you're done! More In Depth Example This is specific to Mac OS X 10.6, but should be similar on any Mac or Linux system. Open Terminal Change to hidden SSH folder $ cd /.ssh/ Generate a key ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096. Restarting org.openbsd.ssh-agent. I made sure that my public key on Gitlab is the same as my githubrsa.pub, and it indeed was the same. I have uncommented sshdconfig's to PasswordAuthentication no. Checked /var/log/authd.log for errors relating to SSH, but nothing relevant. What could be the issue?

Description
The SSH stands for Secure Shell or Secure Socket Shell used for managing the networks, operating systems and configurations and also authenticates to the GitLab server without using username and password each time. You can set the SSH keys to provide a reliable connection between the computer and GitLab. Before generating ssh keygen, you need to have Git installed in your system.
Creating SSH Key
Generate the private key and certificate signing request file format. Step 1 − To create SSH key, open the command prompt and enter the command as shown below −
Symmetric key algorithms are sometimes referred to as secret key algorithms. This is because these types of algorithms generally use one key that is kept secret by the systems engaged in the encryption and decryption processes. This single key is used for both encryption and decryption. Symmetric key algorithms tend to be very secure. RSA was developed in 1978. RSA was the first widely used asymmetric algorithms used for signing and encryption. It supports key lengths of 768 and 1,024 bits. The RSA algorithm uses a three-part process. The first part is key generation. The keys used in the RSA algorithm are generated using mathematical operations based on prime numbers. The following are the major asymmetric encryption algorithms used for encrypting or digitally signing data. Diffie-Hellman key agreement: Diffie-Hellman key agreement algorithm was developed by Dr. Whitfield Diffie and Dr. Martin Hellman in 1976. Diffie-Hellman algorithm is not for encryption or decryption but it enable two parties who are involved in communication to generate a shared secret. Modular algorithm asymmetric key generation. One of the main problems with the use of encryption algorithms public key lies in its low performance. For example, a symmetric encryption algorithm allows you to decrypt 256 bytes 4000 times faster than an asymmetric algorithm. There are many encryption algorithms for the public keys.
It will prompt for 'Enter file in which to save the key (//.ssh/id_rsa):', just type file name and press enter. Next a prompt to enter password shows 'Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase):'. Enter some password and press enter. You will see the generated SSH key as shown in the below image −
Step 2 − Now login to your GitLab account and click on the Settings option.

Step 3 − To create SSH key, click on the SSH keys tab at left side of the menu.
Step 4 − Now go to C drive, you will see the file with .pub extension which was generated in the first step.
